Regional & County Card Payment Data
The Northern and Western Regional Assembly has released its latest “Regional Economic Briefing Note”, with the May 2025 edition focusing on the value of domestic credit and debit card payments taking place in the Northern and Western Region of Ireland, between October 2022 and March 2025.
The purpose of the “Regional Economic Briefing Notes” is to provide stakeholders in the Northern and Western Region of Ireland with a brief update on the latest and key data releases related to the region. The key findings are as follows:
- The value of domestic credit and debit card payments in the Northern and Western Region of Ireland amounted to €8.2 billion in 2024, up 9.9 per cent relative to the previous year. This includes online payments and “point of sale” payments.
- In 2024, Leitrim recorded the highest annual growth rate in the value of domestic credit and debit card payments in the Northern and Western Region and the 2nd highest nationally.
- The largest level of domestic card payments in the Northern and Western Region took place in Galway, with the county accounting for 38 per cent or €3.1 billion of domestic card payments in the region in 2024.
- Dublin accounted for just under 60 per cent of the value of domestic card payments in Ireland in 2024, despite accounting for just under 30 per cent of Ireland’s population.
- The value of domestic credit and debit card payments in the Northern and Western Region amounted to €2 billion in Q1-2025, up 4.4 per cent relative to Q1-2024. Although welcoming, this represents a considerable easing of growth in comparison to previous quarters.
- In March 2025 alone, a total of €711 million in domestic credit and debit card payments took place in the Northern and Western Region of Ireland.
