Interreg Atlantic Area 2021-2027 – First Call for Projects

The First Call for Projects intends to select high innovative quality transnational projects, in which relevant organisations cooperate to make regions more resilient to common challenges that know no borders and cannot be solved alone. Project proposals can be submitted under the three thematic Programme priorities and seven specific objectives. The description of priorities and objectives, together with the type of actions, is provided in the Approved Cooperation Programme 2021-2027.

The project application follows a one-step procedure.

Read below the Terms of Reference for this call.

Calendar

The call will be open from the 14th of October 2022 to the 17th of February 2023, until 6pm (Lisbon time). Results should be communicated to candidates within 6-8 months after submission.

The Monitoring Committee approval decision is foreseen for the end of June 2023.

Budget

The Programme budget allocated to this First Call is €45.4 million. This allocation may be adjusted by the Monitoring Committee in line with the Programme needs.

Who can apply?

A wide range of organisations, under public or private law, are potential beneficiaries of the European Regional Development Fund and may therefore join a project partnership. Lead Partner organisations can be public bodies, universities, education and research organisations, private institutions (not-for-profit) and international organisations acting under national law. The Lead Partner must be located in the Programme eligible area.

Designing a new transport model for the North and West

The Northern and Western region is highly dependent on the private car for travel to work and education. This is reflective of the low level of suitable alternative transport modes available and the dispersed and low level of urbanisation in the region.

Ireland’s 2030 decarbonisation ambition will require addressing one of the key regional challenges: the provision of sustainable transport options both within and between our urban and rural areas to reduce high levels of car dependency.

‘The focus of this project is to investigate and advance the transition of the Northern and Western Region of Ireland into a low-carbon, sustainable and connected transportation system in line with national and global climate action and sustainable development targets’, according to David Minton, Director of the Northern and Western Regional Assembly

Cathaoirleach of the Northern and Western Regional Assembly Cllr David Collins said this demonstrates the leadership by the Atlantic Technological University (ATU). This is an opportunity to work with two leading regional academics, Dr. Amaya Vega and Dr. Brian McCann, who have led this from the start.

Cllr Collins says a significant part of the work will entail the collaboration and engagement with stakeholders in the region including the Northern and Western Regional Assembly who are part-funding this project.

Interreg Northern Periphery and Arctic Programme – Second Call for project applications

The Second Call for project applications is open from 5th October to 5th December 2022, for all Priorities. The Interreg NPA Monitoring Committee will decide on Second Call applications on 22nd March 2023.

The First Call for Preparatory projects also closed recently, and decisions were made towards the end of November. All things considered, throughout 2022 the new Interreg NPA programme reached its cruising speed and is now ready to welcome new project applications in its Second Call.

About the Second Call for projects

The programme is looking to fund projects in all Priorities:
• PRIORITY 1: Strengthening the innovation capacity for resilient and attractive NPA communities
• PRIORITY 2: Strengthening the capacity for climate change adaptation, and resource sufficiency in NPA communities
• PRIORITY 3: Strengthening the organisational capacity among NPA communities to make use of cooperation opportunities

This means that in addition to Main projects under Priorities 1 and 2, it will be possible to participate in a new type of project called Capacity building projects addressing Priority 3.

Under Priority 1 and 2 Main projects are expected to develop concrete and durable project outputs, leading to a positive impact on the project’s target groups in the Programme area.

The purpose of Priority 3 small-scale projects is to strengthen the organisational capacity among NPA communities to make better use of cooperation opportunities, and by doing so develop more resilient communities. This includes working with natural and cultural heritage to protect, promote and develop these important features for the programme area and developing wider territorial synergies and links to the benefits of the programme area.

In addition, this type of project is aimed at building up cooperation capacity and experience for representatives of specific underrepresented groups (e.g. young people, and indigenous peoples) in the programme area. The ambition is that partners become better suited for engagement in main projects as partners in the future.

In the second call, project applications addressing the development and transfer of capacity-building concepts to engage young people in cooperation are of particular interest

Please visit the Second Call for projects webpage to access the Terms of Reference and Application pack.
