Northern Periphery & Arctic – Looking to the future Programme.
At the NPA Monitoring Committee meeting last December, it was decided that a bridging call for preparatory projects targeting main projects in the NPA 2021-2027 would first be launched.
Concept
As with previous bridging calls, the main purpose is to build a project pipeline for future main projects in the forthcoming programme and keep momentum and front-loading the future programme; thus allowing for a strong start. Secondly, to explore in practice the different themes proposed in the new programme which could influence the programming process or help design future calls.
Timeline
21st June 2021 – Call pre-announcement
1st July 2021 – Webinar
16th August 2021 – Call opens
9th September 2021 – How to Apply seminar

2010 Report
On Friday the 18th of June the Joe Bonner Link Road was officially opened.
The Joe Bonner Link Road provides a connection between the Neil T Blaney Road and the Port Road.
The project was funded by European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the Designated Urban Centre Grant Scheme (DUCGS) and Donegal County Council. The ERDF fund is administered by the Northern & Western Regional Assembly.
The Project is one of the NWRA’s capital flagship projects within urban centres. Under this Scheme a total of €28,000,000 was approved to support seven projects in our region including Letterkenny
The road is 323 metres long providing a new Urban Landscape incorporating footpaths and cycleways with the Junction with the Neil T Blaney Road due to be signalised before the end of the year.
The Road has been constructed across difficult ground conditions and has been future proofed with the provision of foul sewer, watermain, ESB and telecommunications infrastructure in collaboration with Irish Water, ESB and Telecommunication companies. The works were completed to a tight deadline with the project being designed and constructed almost entirely by Donegal County Council staff.

The food in our cupboards and in our kitchen is ultimately connected to climate change and global poverty, as well as to our health. That is according to Patrick Devine, with the Northern and Western Regional Assembly.
Last year the Assembly responded to a call for proposals by the European Commission for COSME projects to develop ‘Social Economy Missions’ which will bring together Regional and Local Authorities with similar social economy priorities and accompanied by regional and local social economy stakeholders (social enterprises, cooperatives, SMEs, etc.). Under the call, the NWRA along with project partners in Hungary and Romania were successful in securing funding for the mission ‘Local Food Chains’.
According to Devine ‘people who are closer to their food supply can become more engaged and informed consumers who will support an ecologically-sound food production system. It makes us all better!’
The project entitled ‘Local Food Chains’ aims to Develop sustainable and resilient short Agri-food supply chains through Interregional learning and collaboration. Through this project, the NWRA will work with social enterprises in Ireland operating in the agri-food sector such as community farms to learn from other social enterprises across Europe so they can become more integrated into local food chains and ensure their long-term viability.
Chairperson of the NWRA Cllr David Maxwell welcomed the strategic initiative. According to Maxwell the Farm to Fork Strategy as part of the EU Green Deal is going to transform food production. We need to prepare strategically for our farmers, our growers, our producers and our consumers. We are in a new world of ‘hyper-localisation’.
The NWRA has the responsibility of delivering the Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy which supports the environmental and resilient model of sustainable development in the region. The Local Food Chains project is an opportunity for the Assembly to work with key stakeholders in the region by supporting Social Enterprises which have environmentally sustainable business models and empower communities across the region.
The first workshop for the Local Food Chains project is taking place at 9.30am on Tuesday, 8th June 2021 and will be attended by partners and stakeholders from all three participating regions in Ireland, Romania and Hungary. The aim of the Workshop is to present Case Studies from Ireland and the speakers include:
