ERDF Scheme:

Taighde Éireann – Research Ireland, ARC Hubs

The goal of the Research Ireland ARC Hubs Programme is to establish a new model for regional innovation and entrepreneurial training, and to accelerate the translation of early-stage, cutting-edge research towards commercial application at a regional level.

The realisation of the programme will be through the establishment of regional Research Ireland ARC Hubs in thematic areas that will be aligned with the respective regional strategic priorities and the National Smart Specialisation Strategy.

The Research Ireland ARC Hubs, as a distributed consortium of Research Bodies, will create regional ecosystems focused on optimising research translation and training future entrepreneurs through establishing new academic networks and bringing together stakeholders, while leveraging existing supports, as appropriate. The Research Ireland ARC Hub Programme will enhance and accelerate the commercialisation of research to create new products, processes and services.

The primary objectives of Research Ireland’s ARC Hubs programme are:

  • To drive regional development by accelerating early-stage, cutting-edge research, to commercial impact readiness, in areas aligned with Ireland’s smart specialisation strategy
  • To develop a new cohort of entrepreneurial scientists and engineers that are primed from an early stage to exploit the commercial potential of their research endeavour
  • To accelerate the research translation and commercialisation process by reducing lead time, bureaucracy and complexity and by implementing agile project management and funding procedures
  • To successfully transition Research Ireland-funded research projects into existing national and international closer-to-market supports, as appropriate.

Following agreement with Member State DG Desk, Research Ireland launched a new ARC Hub – NWR Call in June 2024. This call seeks applications for an ARC Hub located exclusively within the NWR and is currently in the stage of undergoing Research Ireland’s international peer-review process. If an application is successful, the call will conclude with an award by the end of June 2025, with a four and a half year funding period.

  • IB: Research Ireland
  • Budget: 30.7M Euro

Programme Calls

A dedicated call for an ARCH hub in the Northern & Western Region was launched in June of 2024 following an unsuccessful first call.

An award will be made following extensive assessment and review in summer 2025 should there be a successful submission.
